From the book by Hon. Newt Gingrich. Published by Baen Books 1984

Although a generation of viewers here, know me as a Anime fan artist, when I first started out painting in 1977, I considered myself a space artist. I tried getting a job at Jet Propulsion Labs in Pasadena, in 1982. Thanks to a planetary geologist who worked there, Warren James, I did get two freelance jobs, doing art for the Venus Radar Mapper.

I also contributed art to the Planetary Report, and the L5 Society, which had monthly publications.

It was only after graduating Art Center College in 1982 that I realized that the best living I could make, would be found in New York City, in the Sci-Fi publishing realm.

In Feb. 1984, just months after I arrived, Jim Baen gave me the chance to do a space art cover, from someone I've never heard of-a Georgia congressman named Newt Gingrich. Basically, the book laid out a blueprint for future space exploration, starting with the Space Shuttle.

It turned out "Window of Opportunity" was prophetic, but in name only. The window has closed, the space program dead, and, events of the past weeks, are the heartbreaking, sight of the last Space Shuttle over DC, headed to a museum.

As one who grew up in the 60's, we fully expected a space station (like the one in 2001 a Space Odyessy), and from there along with a manned colony on the moon, manned trips to Mars, and beyond.
